I had the pleasure in attending the premiere of Silent Roar. An incredible feature length debut from Johnny Barrington, which showcases a near perfect portrayal of overwhelming grief, hope and self exploration.
“Our wonderful surfing extravaganza.”
Stellar performances from all the cast, however, there are noticeable standouts from leading actors Louis McCartney as Dondo and Ella Lily Hyland as Sas. Both newcomers give genuine and raw performances, particularly when acting one on one with each other.
Being shot entirely on film adds to the natural essence of the film. Being filmed in the Outer Hebrides, the surroundings stand as a beautiful back drop and adds to the feeling isolation and loneliness that comes with battling grief, as we saw Dondo struggle with throughout the film. Although slightly losing itself in the third act it comes to a satisfying conclusion in it’s small but impactful runtime of around 90 minutes.
This quirky, genuine, and atmospheric debut feature from Barrington has me looking forward to what he will make next if it is as touching and truthful as the story of Dondo and his unwavering faith and love.
