James Gunn has only gone and done it. Furthering his growing reputation as the saviour of the superhero genre after the success of his The Suicide Squad (2022) and Peacemaker (2022) under DC and Warner Brothers. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 acts as the conclusion to the trilogy that Gunn started under Marvel in 2014 with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel Studios current phase four of their cinematic universe have been disappointing audiences release after release lately, with audiences believing the superhero genre is becoming tired and lowering in quality of effects and writing that marvel were known for being the most consistent with nailing in recent years.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 comes to save the genre with not only the visuals holding up to previous instalments from 2014 and 2017 but also holds in it’s humorous and touching writing with the well choreographed and written action and heroic sequences. It has been described as an apology letter from marvel and a love letter to the characters many of us having grown to love and find entertainment in over the past decade. The conclusion to the film acts as the perfect goodbye to the characters and also tribute to their legacies and shows how you can tie up long lasting characters stories without having to kill them off to get the emotional reaction wanted from the audiences.

Personally, I cried throughout, beginning to end, and more than satisfied with the ending to all the character who we, for the foreseeable future have no plans to see on screen again. It is safe to say I won’t be listening to Dog Days are over by Florence + The Machine without tears for a while.

Marvel’s perfect trilogy, written and directed by James Gunn.

“I love you guys.”
