A subtle comedic film with drama and edge Afire directed by Christian Petzold is a potential gem.

The simplicity of the film is it’s strongest asset as it allows for the complexity of the relationships between the five characters to unfold and be the focus.

Thomas Schubert gives a phenomenal performance that pulls you in and leaves you experiencing hilarity and shock. The character appearing unlikable, but relatable leaves us with conflicting feelings towards the lead.

Shot beautifully with witty dialogue, let down slightly by the slower than necessary pace, which felt like the film dragged out in certain moments. This left what should’ve been larger and more focused moments of the film to feel rushed.

I fear Petzold’s film is a victim of style over substance. Visually beautiful but a weak and undeveloped plot that is trying to be saved by it’s characters, which only two of the five have any depth.
